A Charm From Two Worlds: MAMSIR x ERIK-YVON
Some objects are made alone. This one wasn't.
ERIK-YVON worked with MAMSIR, an independent jewellery brand from Magandjin (Brisbane), to create a single collaboration piece: a charm, cast in solid sterling silver, set with a lab grown pink sapphire, and bundled exclusively with the Second Skin Distressed Cap during the pre-sale.
It's a small object. It took two independent labels, working in two different mediums, to make it.
Put ERIK-YVON and MAMSIR side by side and the overlap is obvious almost immediately. Both labels are independent. Both are built around heritage that isn't Anglo-Australian by default, Mauritian on one side, Filipino on the other, and both use that heritage as raw material rather than a footnote. Both are explicitly queer-coded, without needing to explain themselves to do it. It's the kind of pairing that looks inevitable in hindsight, even though nobody planned it that way from the start.
Designing the charm
The MAMSIR Jewel Charm began, like most contemporary jewellery does now, as a digital file. It was designed using 3D modelling techniques, shaped and reshaped on screen before a single physical version existed. Once the form was locked, it was cast in solid sterling silver and set with a lab grown pink sapphire, a stone grown under controlled conditions rather than mined, chemically and structurally identical to a natural sapphire but without the extraction footprint that comes with traditional gemstone sourcing.
From there, the process leaves the screen entirely. Each charm is individually finished by hand, which means no two pieces come out exactly the same. It's a small detail, but it's the difference between an object that was manufactured and an object that was made.
MAMSIR's work returns again and again to one particular kind of shape: organic forms borrowed from the natural world, plant life and animal life both, usually the spiky, awkward, faintly alien kind rather than anything conventionally pretty. This charm carries two references at once.
The first is the durian fruit and the second is the spiny deep sea spider crab, an angular, long-limbed creature found across the Philippines and Australia, built entirely out of sharp edges and strange proportions.
Neither is an obvious choice for jewellery. That's rather the point. MAMSIR's design language treats the overlooked and the slightly repellent as beautiful on its own terms, without softening it into something more palatable. The charm folds both references into one small, spiked, silver form, something that could sit just as easily in a natural history museum as on a cap brim.
The cap it was made for
The charm wasn't designed as a standalone piece. It was built specifically to style with the Distressed Cap, ERIK-YVON's washed vintage black cotton cap, finished with a raw-edge appliqué flower patch and a frayed brim trimmed in pink and blue.
Worn alone, the cap already carries the ERIK-YVON attitude: worn-in, slightly dressed-up, unmistakably not off-the-rack. Clip the MAMSIR charm onto it and it shifts register entirely, closer to jewellery for the head than headwear with an accessory attached. It's a small addition that changes how the whole piece reads.
ERIK-YVON and MAMSIR are two independent labels, each building their own distinct world out of heritage, colour and an appetite for the strange. Putting them together didn't require either brand to compromise its identity. The charm is unmistakably a MAMSIR object, and the cap it sits on is unmistakably ERIK-YVON. The collaboration is the space where those two worlds touch, briefly, in one small, spiked, silver object shaped like a durian and a deep sea crab.
